Activities & Programs

With dozens of scheduled monthly activities, there is always something to do at River Commons. Our activity director plans a wide variety of events for every talent and personality. The following activities are just a few of the events that you will come to enjoy as a resident of River Commons. See our resident activity calendar for the current month’s schedule.

Regular Weekly Activities

  • Aquacise – Gentle, slow moving, range of motion exercise in our heated swimming pool
  • Beach Walkers – Enjoy an early morning stroll under the palm trees along Charlotte Harbor
  • Bible Study – Non-denominational study of the Bible with Rev. Charles and his dog Sadie
  • Bingo – Play Bingo for a dime per card, and win some money!
  • Book Club – Enjoy hearing books read aloud followed by lively discussion
  • Card Games – Bridge, Canasta, Pinochle, Pitch, Poker, Pokeno, and more! Monthly workshops are held for those wanting to learn a new game
  • Chat ‘n Coffee – Join other residents in the building for coffee, good conversation, and special programs
  • Conductorcise Classes – Fun toning exercise – learn to lead the band!
  • Exercise Classes – Chair exercise, Conductorcise, Tai Chi, fitness class, beach walking, and aqua exercise
  • Game Day – An opportunity to play classic games with others who also enjoy them (Dominoes, Cribbage, Chinese checkers, Yahtzee, Checkers, Scrabble …)
  • Shopping & Banking – Scheduled trips to local banks, grocery, department stores, and the Murdock Mall – as well as trips to the Charlotte County Cultural Center
  • Strength & Tone Training – Doctors and physical therapists recommend weight training as one of the best forms of physical exercise that active older adults can engage in
  • Tai Chi – Very beneficial, slow-moving, gentle Chinese exercise

Regular Monthly Activities

  • Blood Pressure/Hearing Clinics – Have your blood pressure monitored or hearing tested by local health service providers without having to leave home
  • Community Meeting – A monthly informational meeting for residents and management to share ideas and community concerns
  • Crafts – Varied fun craft projects
  • Devotional – A pastor-led non-denominational worship service followed by Communion. Catholic Mass is also regularly held
  • Lectures – Educational lectures offered by local professionals addressing senior issues
  • Lunch Bunch – Visit a different restaurant monthly to sample various types of cuisine
  • Music/Art Appreciation – Enjoy musical performances offered by local talent and trips to local art galleries and museums
  • New Resident Welcome Coffee – A chance to meet other residents over coffee
  • Outings – An adventure to various fascinating sites offered by surrounding communities
  • Slide Shows – Slides and lectures from different corners of the world
  • Special Programs – To celebrate special dates and events each month
  • Story Time – Enjoy listening to books read aloud
  • Swap Meet – Swap old treasures for new for free
  • Theme Dinners – Enjoy a “special” dinner served in our Harbour Dining Room with a fun theme, decorations, wine, entertainment, favors, and an extra special menu prepared by our own Chef Johnson and his wonderful team
  • Teas – Sip a cup of afternoon tea at our theme parties replete with tea sandwiches and special pastries
  • Video and Popcorn – On the big screen TV
  • Wine & Cheese Party – A monthly social offering delicious hors d’oeuvres, wine, and sparkling beverages

  • Fashion Shows – Walk the runway and model the latest fashions!
  • Food Shows – Sample new and exciting foods offered by area vendors
  • Mini-Health Fairs – An opportunity to meet area providers and learn what services are available
  • Poolside light meals – Listen to lovely reggae music while enjoying a scrumptious breakfast beside our sparkling heated pool, afterwards take a dip!
